A long day

Yesterday night around 10pm I went to write a blog post and I realized I hadn’t completed a single thing related to what I wanted to be talking about. I had run several loads of laundry but hadn’t folded it up or put it away, and I hadn’t even eaten dinner (as of 10 PM). Very successful first day of blogging to keep myself accountable!

The reason I hadn’t eaten dinner was because I had popcorn at 5ish so I wasn’t particularly hungry. Oh yea, and ate 5 cookies on my way home after the popcorn. Super nutritious, right? So I decided I should cook at 10PM before writing this, and I did! Tilapia and veggies, on my new cast iron pan I got for Christmas (pictured below).

After I did that I thought about writing again, and then realized I had a couple of “non-negotiables” I wanted to implement (meaning things I am required to do everyday, or when applicable). I got this idea from Dana at A Slob Comes Clean – here is a link to her non-negotiable tasks page! So I ended up folding and putting up all my laundry, cleaning my dishes, and cleaning my counters/stove-top! Dana highly recommends dishes being the first thing to get under control, so that is my goal.

Now that it’s 5 AM, I should probably hit the hay. Talk to you guys later!

The “Buggy” Developer

I’m a mess..

So want to give you a perspective of where I am coming from in regards to why I want to discuss housekeeping here in addition to the other topics I mentioned in my first post. Basically, as long as I can remember I have been a mess. My room was always a disaster – As a kid my room I shared with my sister was a mess, through high school my own room was a mess, through college my dorm room just the same, and when I moved into this apartment I wanted to change.

When I first moved in, I tried really hard to keep it super clean. I was on top of  doing the dishes and sweeping the floor and keeping my stove top shiny white; I made my bed every morning (decorative pillows and all), and bought separate hampers to sort my laundry as I took it off, I wrote up cleaning schedules, etc.

Where it started going down hill..

Then about a month into living here I saw something I wish I hadn’t…a roach. Honestly, I thought it was a beetle, so I vacuumed it up, and let it go outside. Then a couple days later I came across not one, not two, but THREE. That’s when I sent a picture to my dad and long story short – the building I live in has a roach problem. Shiver. I was so freaked out I didn’t want to stay here.

Then, I got bug killer spray, bait, traps – the works. I felt a bit more comfortable since it seemed to be doing the trick, but then was even more particular about keeping everything perfectly clean. I’m not sure when, but at some point I let it slip. I wasn’t as good about making my bed, and doing the dishes right away, etc. I didn’t notice any bugs for awhile, and I kept treating so I figured it was all good. That was, until about a month ago I started noticing little, itty bitty roaches. Long story short – the back of my fridge was a nest and the bug guys some how hadn’t killed it despite my complaints to management. Now that situation has been put under control I was convinced to keep my apartment in better shape such that it will not be inviting to those nasty roommates.

The now

Despite that, I have not been able to keep my kitchen in check (of course that’s where the bugs love to live). So in distress last week I googled how to stop being a slob (because, in that moment since I hadn’t washed my dishes from the night before that’s what I felt like). I found this blog: A Slob Comes Clean. She has been doing this for 8 years now, so I have not read her entire blog, but I have read through quite a bit, as well as have been listening to her podcast (from the beginning). So, her blog is what motivated me to start this blog, and getting my mess under control. I’m not sure where this blog will go in the future, but like Dana, I hope it will help me keep accountable.

So, that’s the origin of the “Buggy” in the name of my blog!

Hello world!

Why hello to potential future readers!

Today I’m writing my first post ever!  I’m going to tell you my vision for this blog which will probably change. There are three things I would love to write about, so I’m going to write about all three and I think they are relevant to one another.

First and foremost, I’m a developer and I want to  share my learning excursions! I’m hoping if I talk about them here, it will give me some kind of accountability to make sure I keep learning. I love to learn, but sometimes I forget that.

Secondly, as developers tend to be stereotyped, I tend to be kind of a mess. I’m hoping to talk about my attempts to overcome my messiness and I hope maybe someday that will help someone else.

Lastly, another developer stereotype – I tend to eat like crap a lot more than I should. I’m hoping to continue learning to cook and figure out ways to motivate myself to eat better (more veggies, less candy, more water, less soda, etc).

So I hope you will all hang on for the ride!
